India’s system has become so rotten that sooner or later we are going to have to do something to change it. In practice, it functions as a one-man show. The supremacy of the Parliament and division of powers among the various organs of government are only on paper. One person or a small group of people at the top control the president, the legislators, the governors and has the unlimited powers to amend the constitution. Since the members have to vote along the party lines, opposition has no teeth. It can make speeches but cannot stop government from taking an action or scrutinizing an executive department for wrongdoing. Likewise, There are no avenues of public participation.

Certain constitution amendments have made the constitution irrelevant. A political party with two-thirds majority in parliament can amend the amendment provision itself, or remove a branch of government altogether, or outlaw every other political party and even repeal the entire constitution. Our system is a case of systematic failures.
